Washington State PTA was founded on April 14, 1905, by Abby Williams Hill of Tacoma, an artist who saw the need for an organization to support Washington's children. Thanks to Abby's leadership and vision - and that of thousands of parents and teachers who have carried her vision forward - Washington State PTA has been a leading voice for children in the state ever since.

For 117 years Washington State PTA has been at the forefront advocating for the health, well-being, and education of all children across the state and across the nation. Learn more about our history here.

Region 7 News

Greetings from New Region 7 Director
Thanks for all your patience as I’m getting up and running. My desk has spreadsheets and maps and sticky notes filled with notes and ideas, and I’m learning a lot about our Region and our various PTAs.

As we start to hear COVID case numbers going down and possibly mask mandates being eased, we are starting to see schools more open to volunteers and end-of-year activities returning, even if they are not exactly what’s been done in the past.  In fact, for many schools and PTAs, this continues to be a time when events and programs might be re-imagined.  As you've heard and in that same spirit, this year we can also look forward to the WSPTA Convention May 20-22 being in-person AND online!  This spring will be a great opportunity for all of our leaders to get reinvigorated with PTA passion!

For all of our Region 7 PTAs, I'll be hosting virtual (Zoom) Region 7 "Open Office Hours" from Noon-1:00 PM every other Wednesday. Our next Region 7 "Open Office Hours" will be on Wednesday, April 13. Please feel free to pop in for 5 minutes or for the whole hour. If that time doesn't work for you and you'd like to chat or Zoom with me, please just let me know and we'll schedule something. Details coming soon.

Thanks for all you do!

Two-Part Blog Series about the Russia-Ukraine War

Parents, Kids and Talking About Ukraine
National PTA's Executive Director Nathan Monell has written an impactful series of blog posts about what is happening in Ukraine. In part one, he shares that even as we observe what is happening, so do our children. How do we as parents respond? After consulting with some experts, he shares some advice that we, as parents, can consider. At the end of the post are additional links for resources and information to help families.

Russian and Ukrainian Adopted Children Impacted by War
In part two of the blog series about the Russia-Ukraine War and the effects on children and youth across the country and around the world National PTA's Executive Director Nathan Monell discusses the challenges of children who have been adopted from these countries. For many children in our school and community this is personal. They are dealing with anxiety, sadness, guilt, fear, shame, and worry. What can we do to help? As community leaders, fellow parents and educators, we must show a quiet sensitivity that lets someone - the student, or the parent - know that we care.

WSPTA Testifies on Multiple Bills
Earlier this week, several PTA leaders testified on various bills:

-- Past WSPTA President Michelle Nims spoke in favor of adding a performance exhibit as a graduation pathway to demonstrate proficiencies that align with the student's High School and Beyond Plan.

-- WSPTA Advocacy Director Lizzy Sebring urged members of the Senate Ways and Means Committee to pass HB 1590, a bill that would stabilize state and local funding losses due to enrollment decline.

-- And, speaking in favor of increasing school staffing ratios for nurses, psychologists, social workers and school counselors, WSPTA Advocacy Committee member Mike Uehara-Bingen waited nearly three hours to deliver one minute of testimony in the Senate Ways & Means Committee also that evening.

Council District Impact Report for 2020-2021 PTA Term
Due to unforeseen consequences and rapidly changing landscape caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this past school year was perhaps the most challenging that PTAs have ever experienced. But despite those challenges, the PTAs within our school district all continued to function and adapt so that PTA’s mission would not be forgotten. Although the closure of school buildings and reduced volunteers halted many of our traditional PTA activities, these potential obstacles led to different areas of support, engagement, and ideas. *ALL* of the PTAs in our district made contributions that led to the creation of the 2020-2021 District Impact Report. We are very proud to present this report. Please check it out.

An organization that recognizes diversity values differences and similarities among people through its actions and accountability. These characteristics include age, ethnicity, gender, language and culture, socioeconomic status, among many different things.

When PTAs respect differences yet acknowledge shared commonalities uniting their communities, and then develop meaningful priorities based upon their knowledge, they genuinely represent their communities. When PTAs represent their communities, they gain strength and effectiveness through increased volunteer and resource support.
